Proper air filtration of a shop has a number of benefits. I strongly recommend making such a solution a priority in your shop regardless of if you purchase one or build your own solution.
The first, and most obvious, is that the sooner the fine particles are out of the air, the sooner it is safe to breath without a dust-mask or respirator. Breathing in fine dust particles has been linked to a multitude of cancers and other long-term breathing problems, so best to keep that to a minimum if at all possible.
Second is that air filtration reduces the amount of sawdust that settles on your work surfaces, storage areas, equipment, and floors. This reduces cleaning time, which means more time for practicing your craft. It can also reduce ware and tare on your equipment, which can save you money in the long run.
Thirdly, air filtration reduces the clogging strain on your shop's HVAC solution. Mine is a portable unit. And let me tell you, IF I had only followed the my own recommendation, than the situation of the photo above would not have happened! But I hadn't, I've had to rehab my unit (in +85°F and humid weather to boot).
Good news is that I am building a solution and next week I'll post my specifications about it so that you can build one too!
